One of the select few that can lay a legitimate claim to being the first to introduce the Birmingham Balti although there are a few other contenders. Currently Adil are on the Ladypool Road in rather cavernous but smart premises whilst they await the completion of the refurbishment of their spiritual home on Stoney Lane.

A friendly welcome was a precursor to paid for Poppadums as were the accompanying Mango Chutney and Raitha which I was encouraged to order.

The mandatory dips included a red one which was tasty and obviously chilli based. For starters my wife went for the Tandoori Lamb Chops and she pronounced the quartet very tasty without being overly spicy. My Mushroom Pakora came in a tasty batter but, to be honest, it was a bit too dry for my taste. On reflection, I wish that I’d taken a chance on the Green Chilli Bhaji but when I was informed that the chillies were not deseeded, not being a member of the culinary branch of the SAS, I’m afraid I wimped out.

In my case the main course was a Balti Chicken and Paneer – there was plenty of paneer and chicken to complement this fairly saucy affair. My wife had a Balti Chicken and Mushroom Maliah described as rich and creamy and although it was undoubtedly creamy it had a definite, but not unpleasant spicy back taste. However the downside was the garish red colour of the sauce. I’m not saying that it was high in ‘E’ numbers but when we got back home, my wife vacuumed the house from top to bottom, went for a jog around the block and then wanted to go out clubbing.

In fairness the accompanying Garlic Mushroom Naan was perfect and overall the meal was a decent effort apart from my wife’s Balti Dayglo!
